Key Stage 1 section of CISM aims at providing its students with a warm and encouraging environment where they feel comfortable and are able to perform at their best. We nurture the children in such a way that they respect themselves as well as others and, they are at all times motivated to freely and fully express themselves academically, socially and emotionally. Our teachers work closely together with students and their families in order to achieve success for each and every one of them.

The following are the courses we offer and a little bit about each course.

1 PERSONAL, SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Children are given appropriate periods of time for learning through sustained involvement in concentrated activity.

  • They feel valued and secure and develop a sense of achievement.

  • Play and talk are used as media of learning.

  • They are encouraged to show care and respect for the needs and feelings of others.

2 COMMUNICATION, LANGUAGE AND LITERACY

  • Children are stimulated to communicate to convey ideas, thoughts and concerns.

  • They are involved in the act of talking, to exchange words with meaning and to utilize different communication tools: signs, written or gestures.

  • Children are developing the skills, knowledge and learning habits; how to interconnect and build relationships and succeed in life.

3 LITERACY

  • Children are engaged with activities which include:

  • (1) oracy, which includes vocabulary and listening;

  • (2) an understanding of the alphabetic code, which includes phonological/phonemic awareness and knowledge of the alphabet; and

  • (3) knowledge and understanding about print and its use.

4 PROBLEM SOLVING, REASONING, AND NUMERACY

  • Number rhymes, songs and counting games form an important part of daily activities.
  • Children compare, sort, match, order sequence, and count using everyday objects.

  • Children understand and record numbers.

  • Children use mathematical language and describe shapes, size and quantity.

  • Children respond in a variety of ways to what they see, hear, smell, touch and feel.

5 KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE WORLD

  • Children talk about their families and past and present events in their lives.

  • They are encouraged to ask questions about why and how things work.

  • Children develop skills that include cutting, joining, building and folding for a variety of purposes.

6 PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT

  • Children move confidently and imaginatively with increasing control and co- ordination.

  • Indoor and outdoor areas are used together.

  • They begin to handle appropriate tools and objects with safety and control.

  • Children take part in the annual Sports Day.

7 EXPRESIVE ARTS AND DESIGN

  • Children are occupied with the creative arts and activities that widen their imagination and help children cultivate their thinking process across virtually every domain such as art and design, drama and songs, puppetry and performing arts.

  • They are engaged in open-ended activities, fostering flexibility of the mind.
